Project Gigabit is a UK Government programme aimed at delivering gigabit-capable broadband (1,000 Mbps+) to 99% of the country by 2032.
Progress in ÄûÃʵ¼°¹
In ÄûÃʵ¼°¹, the fibre rollout has been underway for several years led by private sector operators such as Openreach, Virgin Media O2, and other smaller suppliers. At the end of July 2025, gigabit capable coverage is already at 86.4%.
However, not all homes and businesses are included in commercial rollout plans. These areas may require public funding support to ensure they’re not left behind.
Project Gigabit contracts and alternative solutions
To address this, the Government has committed £5 billion to Project Gigabit, managed by Building Digital UK (BDUK), part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). This includes:
- Procurement contracts with broadband suppliers
- Alternative solutions such as the Gigabit Voucher Scheme
Over 30 contracts have already been signed nationwide. In ÄûÃʵ¼°¹, many uncommercial premises may be included in contracts, such as the 5-year Strategic Framework agreement with Openreach, which is now in deployment.
In a few cases, the Gigabit Voucher Scheme may be determined to be the best solution. This allows eligible homes and businesses to collaborate with a supplier and apply for up to £4,500 per property to fund full fibre infrastructure.
Note: The voucher scheme is currently paused in ÄûÃʵ¼°¹.
Looking Ahead
Despite these efforts, a small number of hard-to-reach properties may remain unconnected to gigabit speeds by 2032 primarily due to high cost. For these, the Government is exploring alternative technologies such as 4G, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), 5G and Satellite broadband.
