Watercolour Painting - Urban Sketching & Local Landscapes All Abilities Workshop [SSK]

Course intent

Learn how to draw and paint in an urban setting with cafés, people, shops and buildings. Explore how to pick what want in your picture. Observe your local urban environment in a completely different and artistic way and capture the life, energy and design in your sketches and paintings.

What will I learn?

You learn techniques that can be practised both inside and outside (plein air). Guildford town centre is made up of inspiring historic buildings through to modern developments and houses and has a range of vibrant cafés and shops to explore. You will learn:

  • Sketching Techniques
  • How to pick what to draw
  • How to sketch buildings
  • How to use a variety of different portable mediums suitable for use outside
  • How to design a strong image using composition
  • How to use colour effectively

Watercolour Painting Techniques:

  • How to use different brushes and brush techniques
  • Watercolour Sketching Techniques and speed painting
  • Combining ink with watercolour wash techniques

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Suitable for complete beginners, for those who attended the Introduction to Urban Sketching and for people looking to refresh their painting and drawing skills. For Improvers, you may have completed a watercolour painting course or a drawing course and want to work outside, translating what you see into an exciting image.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Paper: Watercolour paper – Cold Press 300 gsm or similar, A4 or A3 size.
  • Cartridge Paper Pad or Sketchbook: A4 size and at least 120gsm
  • HB, 2B and 4B pencils
  • Brushes: Synthetic or synthetic/hair mixtures, Round (with a point): 12/ 14 or larger (Recommend: Rosemary & Co Designer SER 344)
  • Paints: Artist’s Quality or Student watercolours in tubes or pans; (Artist’s Colours if you can afford them). Most are usually contained in a beginner’s set or can be bought separately
  • Large watercolour palette for mixing paint
  • Fine Liner Pens OR a Dipping pen, nib and ink
  • What can I do when I finish the course?

    To progress onto further urban sketching and watercolour courses and workshops.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
