Course intent

During this engaging course you will develop drawing, painting and design skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the range of techniques and processes used when drawing from a Life Model. This is a course for ‘all abilities’ learners.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Design Techniques

Explore essential principles of perspective and composition to strengthen the structure of your figure work. Learn how thoughtful design choices can enhance the impact and clarity of your drawings and paintings.

Material Knowledge

Gain a solid understanding of a range of materials by experimenting with pencil, charcoal, ink, paint, and mixed media. Discover how different tools, papers, and surfaces influence your technique and creative outcomes.

Craftsmanship

Learn the core principles of life drawing and painting. Sharpen your observational skills to draw with greater accuracy, expression, and confidence. Begin developing a personal sketchbook or portfolio to document your progress and creative exploration.

Production Process

Develop practical techniques such as measuring for proportion, quick gesture drawing, and using geometric shapes to construct the human form. Explore a variety of mark-making approaches and build a working knowledge of colour mixing and colour theory. Study the work of traditional & contemporary artists to deepen your understanding of visual language and inspire your own artistic voice.

Workshop Practice:

Learn essential health and safety procedures in the studio environment, including the correct cleaning and maintenance of tools, equipment and materials, to ensure a safe, efficient, and professional workspace.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

The course is for all abilities. If you have attended other drawing & painting classes, but have not drawn the human figure before then please contact adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk .Full support is given throughout the entire course by this experienced tutor.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

  • drawing paper - size A1/A2 and an A1/A2 flip chart of cheap paper is needed for quick sketches
  • charcoal of mixed sizes
  • pencils,
  • putty rubber/eraser
  • bulldog clips or masking tape for the board
  • tissue or kitchen towels

Other items learners may wish to use later in the course and could include paints and pastels, although these are optional and can be discussed during the class.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress each term by continuing on this Life & Portrait course. You can boost knowledge and skills by trying Saturday workshops.
