Over 700,000 trees have now been planted across the county

This tree planting season we have continued to work with partners, communities, schools, businesses and charities to plant over 49,000 trees and hedgerows, bringing the total number of trees planted in ÄûÃʵ¼°¹ since the start of this initiative to 768, 832. In 2019, we pledged to plant a total of 1.2 million trees by 2030, marking one for every resident.

Planting trees has many benefits; trees produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, help regulate the water cycle, and provide habitat for wildlife, contributing to a healthier planet and improved quality of life.

With an impressive and busy tree planting season this year and five years still to go, we are on track to complete this target by 2030.

We have undertaken many tree planting projects but below are a few of our favourites to give you an idea of what we have been up to.

Mullard Space Science Laboratory, (University College London) based in Dorking

Our team of experts offered a tree planting workshop to staff and supported them to plant a tree each. The staff took a break from their desks to enjoy the planting and benefited from being outdoors. A total of 20 fruit trees were planted within a new orchard area, along with three young oak trees.

Broadwater School, Waverley

Working with this local school, pupils on the school’s eco council planted 753 trees to create a reflection area. Pupils joined the event to help with the planting and learn more about the importance of trees. To showcase working together and community spirit, the community garden opposite the school also got involved and supported the planting.

Goldsworth Park Medical Centre, Woking

10 fruit trees were planted at the medical centre to create a new orchard of cherries, pears, apples and plums for communities to enjoy. This project was funded as part of the NHS Forests scheme which aims to transform green spaces within healthcare sites to improve health, wellbeing and biodiversity. On a drizzly February day, we welcomed volunteers from the local community to help plant their new future fruit orchard space.
